Reuse Architecture - "Tire House"

A theoretical home design using tires and shipping containers. The focus of this design was to utilize industrial waste to create affordable residential space. This was a part of an architectural studio course that blended environmental elements of reuse with standard design corriculum.

The design consisted of a pentagonal exterior that utilized the scrap metal from shipping containers as masonry. The home itself was designed as a loft, with the bedroom looking down at the living space. In addition to this - the design included a garage that was built out of rubber tires.

Inspired by the work of Michael Reynolds - the tires theoretically act as a thermal mass as well as a sound dampener. In his designs the tires were densely packed with earth and used similarly to bricks to construct walls. This technique was structurally sound and walls created this way had the ability to be load-bearing.
